The Inauguration and Grand Opening of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center

By the Grace of God, the Inauguration and Grand Opening of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center was a colorful, joyous, historic occasion celebrated by over three thousand people, addressed by the first Muslim Congressman, by Senator Kennedy, the Governor, the Mayor, City Council President, multiple public officials, national and local Muslim leaders, major interfaith leaders, and positively covered by over a dozen major media pieces in print, T.V. and radio media.

The overarching tone of the inauguration was of humility and gratitude, the message emphasized “peace and welcome to all,” and the remarks highlighted the promise of a beautiful cultural center that all citizens of Boston can be proud of, that builds bridges, and helps lead the Muslim community to active, positive civic engagement in New England.

The Inaugural Breakfast, attended by about 300 interfaith and civic leaders and community members, was addressed by Governor Deval Patrick, Imams Faaruuq and Mahdee, the Dean of Harvard Divinity School, the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, the President of the Black Ministerial Alliance, Rabbi Sanford Seltzer - Director of the Interreligious Center on Public Life, the President of Boston Workmen Circle, and Father Raymond Helmick of Boston College's Theology Department. Honorary co-chairs included Rabbi David Gordis, President Emeritus of Hebrew College, Reverend Hurmon Hamilton, President of Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, Bishop Shaw of the Episcopal Diocerse of MA, and Rev. Sinkford, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

The Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony with Mayor Thomas Menino and Inaugural Friday Service was attended by about 1800 people, and marked with beautiful Quranic recitation, songs by young children, a melodious call-to-prayer from the 145-ft minaret, and remarks by Muslim leaders and public officials. Even the dozen or so protesting against the new Center were invited with open arms, and a group of children, interfaith members, and Muslim clergy walked over to them and handed them roses as a gesture of goodwill, peace, and invitation.

The Grand Inaugural Dinner at the Marriott Copley was attended by about 600 people. The Gala featured entertainment, awards to special honorees Mayor Menino, Mel King, Congressman Ellison, community member Muhammad Ali-Salaam, and a Keynote address by the First Muslim Congressman, Keith Ellison.

On this joyous occasion we thank God, and we thank all of you who have so generously led and supported this landmark project. We invite you to see pictures below and remarks given by various speakers. We also invite you to donate towards the ISBCC's effort to establish revenue-generating (waqf/endowment) initiatives that work towards making the ISBCC self-sufficient.
