Muslims React to Terror Arrest with Shock, Condemnation of Violence, and Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad taught: "Assist your Muslim brother, whether he inflicts injustice or suffers injustice." Someone asked: "but how can we help him when he inflicts injustice?" The Prophet replied, "Forbid him and prevent him from inflicting injustice."

As Muslims, we condemn the planning or committing of any acts of violence or terrorism. We are particularly appalled by the prospect of random violence against our families, our friends, and our neighbors in public areas.

We remind all of us that, although the allegations against Tarek Mehanna are very serious, we should not assume they are true, until they are proven as such. Our justice system is founded on this noble principle. If he is innocent, then we pray for a just judicial process and his speedy release. If the accusations are true, then we are horrified, and unequivocally condemn the prospect of such acts, and pray for justice.

We extend our sympathy and prayer to Mr. Mehanna's family who have been upstanding citizens of Sudbury, contributing to the field of education and childcare for decades.

We fear the deeply negative impact of this incident on the Muslim community. Muslims are being painted with the broad brush of suspicion and mistrust. Members of various congregations find themselves surrounded by the media and placed under pressure and scrutiny. Families and children are frightened of being recognized as Muslims, feeling under siege by their neighbors' fears, society's growing mistrust, cameras in front of their school, their mosques, their homes, and hundreds of reporters asking unending questions.

We also are concerned that the current atmosphere is marginalizing the Muslim community and preventing its members from becoming fully integrated and civically minded citizens.

Almost every Muslim place of worship faces tremendous opposition. Muslims that seek public office are consistently smeared as being radicals. Leaders of Muslim organizations are painted as radicals in order to scare away public officials, and other civic and faith leaders from entering into relationships with Muslim leaders. Discrimination against Muslims in the workplace, housing, and public accommodation is at an all-time high. The entire public discourse in the media and academia with respect to Islam and Muslims revolves almost exclusively around issues of security and terror such that most of our society sees Muslims only through a deeply negative lens.

We worry that such an atmosphere of marginalizing Muslims will lead to a feeling of disaffection and disillusion among Muslims in general and youth in particular.

Thus, we call on Muslim leaders and organizations to engage in more dialogue, more bridge-building, and more programs of civic engagement for Muslim youth; and we call on our public officials and our co-citizens of all faiths to support these efforts with public resources, and to fight against the Islamophobia that seeks to disenfranchise Muslims from being involved in the public sphere. We call on Muslim leaders and organizations to root out any radical teachings they may find in Muslim communities.

We pray to God to keep our society safe, strong, just and tolerant.
